Directors Message:

Hurricane Irma has pushed through the Florida Keys leaving much destruction in her wake. The museum while not unscathed, came through better than most. The collection and the galleries remained dry throughout. The building's roof tiles, grounds, and landscaping sustained damage. For us, Irma was largely wind storm damage.

Museums plan for disasters of all types. We executed our plan which emphasizes preparation for as many possibilities as one could imagine. Everything that was in our control went flawlessly. We are coping with the elements beyond our control. The restoration of communications this morning is a huge step forward in getting started with the recovery process.

The museum will remain closed until governmental emergency declarations are lifted.

Hopefully you are asking what you can do to help. Please click the donate button below to contribute to restoration efforts using your credit card, PayPal account or checking account.

The irony that the treasures of the Atocha and Santa Margarita were lost to the ocean in an early September hurricane in 1622 looms in our daily consciousness. We are devoted to protect our collections, including from hurricanes. Please be part of the recovery.

The museum staffers are all safe and we anticipate the return of those who evacuated.

Sincerely,
Melissa Kendrick
