Students
inspired by Musical Artist,
Lee Pinkerson
The
students from the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum
After-School Program were at the Museum Discovery
Room on Friday, January 20, 2003 to meet two very
special people. In learning about the slave ship,
the Henrietta Marie, they were able to ask
questions of Mr. Corey Malcom, the Director of
Archaeology and chief researcher on the ongoing
efforts to learn more from this shipwreck from
1700. Additionally, they sang with Ms. Lee
Pinkerson. Lee is a songwriter, singer and goes
around the United States giving “A Musical Trip
Through Time.” She features manatees and
alligators, Spanish and English ships, Pirate
Tricks, Calusa and Seminoles!
Lee
came to Key West for Heritage Days at Fort Zachary
Taylor and performed her song, the Henrietta
Marie. On Friday at the Museum the 14 students
became part of the performance by learning the
lyrics and melody of Lee’s song.

HENRIETTA
MARIE
C1
There’s
a new land, America
For plantation of sugar cane
It will make the English rich
With the work of African slaves
So
from England to Africa
They sailed to trade for slaves
From Africa to America
They crossed the ocean’s waves
And landed in Jamaica
And sold the slaves they had
But before they got back to England
The ship wrecked and it sank
C2
Slaves
were taken from their families
Shackled, whipped and chained
They didn’t get enough to eat
And were forced to work out in the fields all day
Now
it’s been three Centuries
Shipwrecked beneath the sea
A scuba diver found a bell inscribed Henrietta
Marie
A slave ship lost at sea, Henrietta Marie
C1
and C2
Now
slavery is outlawed, we seek equality
For all the world one family, bells ringing for
the free
Henrietta
Marie,
your bell rings to be free
