Captain Syd
Jones
Syd
joined Mel Fisher's team in 1979 and has been part of
the major Treasure Salvors finds including the Santa
Margarita mainpile in 1980 and the Atocha mainpile in
1985. Promoted to captain of the M/V Swordfish in 1980
he developed and executed scientific methods to record
survey data of the site and to log artifacts more
accurately. During the more than 7000 hours spent
diving; Syd found the "Cannon Ball Clump" area
of the Margarita site, located the "Memorial
Day" site while on board the Saba Rock, co-captain
of the Swordfish during the mainpile of the Atocha,
recorded all the inital cartography and was part of the
Atocha archaseological data collection team with Tom
Ford and wife, KT Budde-Jones. Syd was captain of the
J.B. Magruder and Operations Manager from 1987-1992
developing the 165-degreee line trail and over all wreck
site further. Syd is responsible for recovering some of
the more significant artifacts from the Atocha,
Margarita and 1715 Fleet sites as well as discovering
other shipwreck sites in the Caribbean. A 1992 hiatus
from the wreck site gave Syd the opportunity to
reorganize and modernize the conservation lab. He
converted the archaic recording system to computers and
developed a protocol for conserving and stabilizing the
artifacts.
Syd
Jones and his wife, KT Budde-Jones left Salvors in 1998
to work for the Flying Tigers Warbird Restoration Museum
in Kissimmee, Florida where they both restore and fly
WWII bomber and fighters.
